According to a team of US food scientists, green tea may decrease weight gain and may be an integral role in the fight against obesity epidemic. Their findings which is in an online journal "Obesity", did a controlled study of obese mice and fed them Epigallocatechin-3-gal late (EGCG), which is a compound found in most green teas. The research suggests that EGCG inhibits an enzyme called pancreatic lipase (PL). PL is secreted in the intestines when you eat which is very important for the digestion of dietary fat. The research also suggests that it could be a cheap alternative to weight loss drugs, which have been proven to have horrible side effects for many patients such as those that have liver toxicity. As well the research shows that not only does the consumption of green tea decreases body weight, but it maintains the body weight after initial weight loss. It is also thought that EGCG combined with caffeine can cause significant weight loss, however ingesting caffeine by itself does not have the same fat loss effects. Below are some more interesting benefits thought of to be in green tea.
The research from this mice particular study concluded that a human would have to consume at least ten cups of the green tea each day in order to get the same dose of EGCG that was given to the mice in the study. One thing that should be noted is that there is no data of the long term use of the caffeine content in green tea along with the EGCG. Typically to induce a therapeutic effect it is suggested that 150 milligrams of tea is needed, which equals about three or four cups per day. Green tea is full of anti oxidant factors which is also attributed longevity of life. Researchers believe that green tea also limits the growth of colorectal tumors, which also was studied in rats treated that were inflicted with cancer. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, green tea reduces mortality due to ALL causes!!! As if this were not enough to convince you that green tea is good for the body, there is a reason that the Asian culture can be in their late 80s and look to be in their 50's. That is because the proanthocyanidins in green tea helps collagen repair. The breakdown of collagen is what causes our skin to lose its elasticity which causes wrinkles.
Obesity is a chronic disease of multifactorial origin that is characterized by excessive accumulation of fat or general hypertrophy of adipose tissue in the body, that is when the natural energy reserve of humans and other mammals, stored as body fat increases to a point where it is associated with numerous complications such as certain health conditions or diseases and increased mortality.
