UN-mandated auditors encounter "bureaucratic hurdles" in entering the Green Zone
The Green Zone is the heavily fortified part of Baghdad that houses the CPA and most western institutions and journalists. It turns out that UN-mandated auditors encountered "bureaucratic hurdles" in entering the Green Zone, which they needed to do in order to audit CPA's management of the Development Fund for Iraq -- some $20 billion of Iraqi money the CPA has been spending over the last year:
[The Auditors] have also encountered bureaucratic hurdles in obtaining the passes needed to enter the “green zone” where CPA and government offices are based.
These are the people that lecture other countries about how corrupt and untransparent they are. (Well, to be sure, many countries are corrupt and untransparent. This just shows that they don't believe in those principles, they just use them as convenient beating sticks)

You are so right-on, Zeynep. I read your fine article on Common Dreams today regarding the corrupt practices of the CPA. But there is so much data and information contained therein that it is difficult to absorb it all. I will definitely need to re-read it. I've been so busy with stuff today though that I'm just now getting round to your blog. Onward for sure but the hypocrisy of America is overwhelming. I'm sure we all realize though that the United States did not get this corrupt and imperial in a decade or two. This stuff has been going on in one form or another probably from the very beginning. Afterall there is the little matter of genocide, slavery, misogyny, racism, homophobia, zenophobia, and the exploitation of every worker who has ever come here. Obviously it takes more than a decade or two to achieve this level of cultural and societal corruption. With your help and the help of a few other bloggers I met yet be able to comprehend the true scope of our history, but it certainly isn't easy or a quick learn. Know what I mean? Thanks again for your concise if not complex analysis. It is very valuable.
